Laser Cutting a Wood Chess Board Inlay
Chess, a game of skill dating back to the 6th – 11th centuries, was designed to be played as if you were on the battlefield itself, two opposing sides with the objective being one king must surrender. Since its origin, the modern day version of chess began in the 1500’s, with the first tournament taking place in London in the mid 1800’s.
We’ve created this beautiful inlaid board out of three different types of wood. Download the files for the chessboard below and follow the instructions to create your own beautiful board!
- 1/8″ thick sheet of wood (such as alder)

- 1/8″ sheet of wood (such as walnut)
- Roll of 3M double stick tape
- 12″ x 12″ piece of wood to attach chessboard
- A Laser System
When you open the file, set your zoom levels at the top to “to fit.” This will give you the entire picture of how we broke down the board to create the individual pieces. The board size for this file is 12″ x 12″, but you can adjust the file to change the size of the board any way that you want.
